English Department
The Department of English promotes the knowledge and appreciation of literature, introduces basic concepts of rhetoric and argumentation, and helps students across the university master effective writing principles. English majors develop a strong foundation in rhetorical theory and skills in literary analysis and writing, which they can use for their vocations, continuing education, or personal development.
The English program prepares majors to communicate effectively, think critically with a global perspective, utilize civic engagement, and acquire broad interests. In addition, the department helps majors and minors prepare for careers and provides a strong foundation for graduate study.
The English Department faculty are such a blessing to their students. They always push us to find joy in our work by encouraging us to pursue not just academic excellence but also integrity, thoughtfulness, and sincerity in all things. I came here with a love of literature, but this program has expanded that into a calling to love the world.

Devyn Hewitt
B.A. English, '20
After graduating from ͬ³Ç¿ìÔ¼, Devyn Ross received a Master of Science in Library Sciences and Archival Studies from the University of North Texas. She currently works as a library assistant at the Abilene Public Library. In this position, she helps patrons with a variety of issues and manages the main collection.
She credits the English Department as the highlight of her time at ͬ³Ç¿ìÔ¼ and hopes it continues to create great readers and writers. Her favorite take-away from this experience is the many papers she wrote. Developing solid grammatical and research skills is beneficial in almost every job she has had since graduation. These assignments prepared her for all types of writing that she has encountered outside of school, such as standard operating procedures, affidavits, finding aids, etc.
