Belton, TX 鈥� The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor College of Visual and Performing Arts will host a special concert by Bedlam, a chamber music duo made up of Kayleen S谩nchez, soprano, and Laudon Schuett, lute. The performance will begin Tuesday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hughes Recital Hall of Presser Hall on the 同城快约 campus. This event is free and open to the public.
S谩nchez and Schuett studied at the Eastman School of Music before forming Bedlam. The due is dedicated to exploring the rich repertoires of music for voice and lute composed in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The word 鈥渂edlam鈥� is a 15th and 16th century colloquial term for the Bedlam Royal Hospital in London, England. At the time it was an infamous psychiatric facility and an inspiration for artists and writers living around it. The word 鈥渂edlam鈥� eventually entered everyday speech has become a term to signify a state of madness, chaos, and the irrational nature of the world.
Perhaps the most famous musical reference to Bedlam is Henry Purcell鈥檚 鈥淔rom Silent Shades and the Elysian Groves,鈥� also known as 鈥淢ad Bess of Bedlam鈥� and is an early example of the 鈥渕ad song鈥� genre.
